20-Yr-Old docked for allegedly assaulting police officers in Osun

A 20-year-old man, Rasaki Azeez, was on Thursday arraigned in an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osun for allegedly assaulting police officers.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to a five-count charge bordering on assault, breach of public peace and malicious damage preferred against him.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Irewole Jimoh, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 16, at about 10:05 pm, at Ipetu-Modu area, Osun.

Jimoh said that the accused conspired with others at large to assault some police officers including Insp. Salau Ayodeji, Sgt. Irewolede Jimoh, Cpl. Ogudare Aliu, and Constable Joseph Oguntayo.

He said the police officers were performing their lawful duties in the area where they were attacked by the defendant and his cohorts who are at large.

The prosecutor said the incident led to breach of public peace and also the damage of a wristwatch of one of the police officers before the situation was brought under control with the help of other law enforcement officers on duty.

He said the offence contravened sections 356(1),451,356(2), 249(d) and 516A(1) of the Criminal Code cap 34 vol. 11 Laws of Osun, 2003.

The defence counsel, Mrs Funke Oyewole, prayed the court to grant her client bail in the most liberal terms.

The Magistrate, Mrs Ai Sanomi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 and two sureties in like sum.

Sanomi said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, with evidence of tax payment, among other conditions.

The Magistrate adjourned the case until Jan. 23 for hearing.
